a while ago, during dinner with my family, the topic of gay rights came up somehow, and i was visibly upset because my parents weren't agreeing with what i was saying. then my mom ended with, "It doesn't matter right, because we're all people."
tonight, i was in the kitchen getting something and my mom was watching tv in the family room. Her back was to me, so she couldn't see me, but she was flipping channels and landed on FOX News (which is an entry in itself). The anchor said, "Canada has now joined the Netherlands & Spain in legalizing same sex marriage..." and i hear my mom snicker and say "geez" in an annoyed tone.
i slammed the cabinet shut and walked away because it just reminded me of how... "republican" she is. both my parents voted for Bush. need i say more? if my mom really did beleive what she said to me before, she wouldn't be snickering at the tv. it just reminded me that there are still people out there who are so caught up in their ways that anything new or different is not right.
don't get me started on the fact that Bush nominated a conservative Republican to the Supreme Court.. what happened to the balance of power? democracy anyone? anyone? We could potentially be regressing 30+ years instead of moving forward.
Is this the "American Dream?" to live in a country that violates and surpresses human rights? to be ruled by a government that is supposed to be in a democracy, when the government is dominated by one party? people from other countries looking to America only see that vision of a 6 figure job, a big house in the suburbs with the white picket fence, but don't see the political issues that are making that dream into a nightmare.
thanks canada for one more reason you are a better country than America. who knows, maybe people in other countries will be going for the "Canadian Dream."
